The Future of Taxis: My Thoughts After Years Behind the Wheel in Marlow

Whenever I’m driving passengers down the A404 or dropping someone off for an early flight at Heathrow, people often look up at the rearview mirror and ask me: “Safraz, what do you think taxis will look like in ten years?”

Between the rise of big booking apps, the shift toward electric cars, and all the talk about self-driving vehicles, our industry is definitely changing fast. But while tech companies love to talk about futuristic ideas like flying cars over big cities, I look at things a bit differently. Here is what the future of taxi services actually looks like from my perspective as a local driver right here in Marlow.

Going Electric Just Makes Sense

You have probably noticed more and more electric and hybrid cars on our local streets. For us drivers, moving over to electric fleets isn’t just a green trend—it's a massive upgrade for our passengers.

First of all, it means cleaner air for Buckinghamshire. Nobody wants our historic town centres, like Marlow High Street, filled with noisy, idling engines during the morning school runs. Secondly, modern electric vehicles are incredibly quiet and smooth. If you have ever had to wake up at 4:00 AM for a stressful flight out of Gatwick, you know how much a peaceful, quiet cabin helps you relax before a long journey.

Why the Human Touch Beats an Algorithm

Big apps like Uber have completely changed how people book rides, but an app can only do so much. A piece of software sitting on a server somewhere doesn't actually know Marlow.

An algorithm doesn’t know about the sudden, frustrating bottlenecks at the Handy Cross or Bisham roundabouts during Friday afternoon rush hour. It doesn't know the best local shortcuts through Marlow Bottom or Lane End when the main roads get blocked by roadworks.

More importantly, an app doesn’t give you accountability. When you book a local car, you know exactly who is turning up. You get a reliable driver who will greet you by name, help you carry your heavy luggage to the front door, and make sure you feel safe and comfortable the entire way.

Looking Ahead

While tech giants in Silicon Valley dream about a world with driverless pods or flying air taxis, those things are a long way off from navigating the narrow, winding country lanes around Little Marlow or Cookham.

No matter how advanced mobile phones and booking systems get, the core of a great taxi service will never change. It will always come down to three simple things: trust, punctuality, and safety. People will always want a professional, friendly face they can rely on to get them to the airport on time or back home safely late at night.

That is how I run things today, and that is exactly how we will keep doing it in the future.
